It has been well said that suicide is a permanent solution
to a temporary problem. It would be more accurate to say that
suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary depression. For it is depression and the irrational and hopeless state of mind
it can engender that is the true lethal ingredient. Suicide is seldom
if ever a normal response to external stressors.
Since it is in the very nature of even the most severe depression
to remit spontaneously at some point, and since modern psychiatric
treatments for depression are capable of restoring normal mood and
hope within a matter of days or weeks, suicide as a result of depression
is truly a needless tragedy.
